What does the equinox and a burglary have in common?

The seasons have changed now that September 22nd is beyond us, with the Northern Hemisphere moving into autumn and the South emerging from winter into spring.

The celestial event that marks this transition is called an “equinox,” and it happens twice every year, around March 21 and Sept. 21. Just what is an equinox, and why does it occur?

The UK being in the northern hemisphere sees the nights shorten, it gets darker quicker and the temperature drops.

The change in daylight hours sees a cosmic shift in the way that people feel, the colder days see people shift from being outdoors to indoors in that warm environment.

But what has this to do with the security industry?

When the clocks go back the days become shorter and the nights last longer. As a nation, do we take extra measures to keep our homes secure during these dark winter months? Should We?Most burglaries occur at night as opportunistic thieves prefer to operate under the cover of darkness. So perhaps it’s no surprise to learn that when nights last longer, as they do during the autumn and winter months, the number of burglaries increases.

Top 5 tips to make your home more secure during the winter months

  1. Burglars are less likely to target a home that looks occupied. Use a timer to switch lights on when you’re away.
  2. Close your curtains and blinds so burglars can’t see your valuables through your windows.
  3. Lock your sheds and outbuildings – and an outside light can blow the cover of darkness for a would-be thief.
  4. Install a burglar alarm – the box on the front of your house will act as a visible deterrent, but you should also set the alarm for when you’re away, sleeping upstairs or even out in your back garden on Bonfire Night.
  5. Carry out a general security check. It takes no more than two minutes to lock your windows and doors.
